Sitting already had a bad reputation even before we all started to spend more time working from home!

In recent years studies have linked sitting for more than 10 hours a day to higher healthcare cost and higher risk of death. Have you bought a standing desk yet? In November 2020 WHO updated its guidelines for physical activity for the first time since 2010. Adults are now advised to do between 150 and 300 minutes of moderate exercise per week which translates into 30-60 mins per day, 5 days a week.

If time is a factor the guidelines suggest upping the intensity and working out in shorter bursts such as 15-30 mins per day, 5 days a week. WHO also highlighted the importance of strength training to increase bone density, muscle quality and strengthen the nervous system – specifically the reticulospinal tract which helps the body control co-ordinated motor activity.

Now is probably a good time to define Pilates.  As per the Collins Dictionary Pilates is ‘a system of exercises designed to improve physical strength, flexibility and posture and enhance mental awareness.’  One thing is for sure, our world has adapted to a more sedentary lifestyle and the ‘work from home’ model amplifies the dangers of just sitting! Any exercise no matter how small is better than none. I would argue that while we advocate for a ‘work from home’ model we need to also advocate for a progressive ‘working out from home’ platform! These two things are not mutually exclusive. The wide range of diverse classes offered across the Reason and Power class schedule addresses all the WHO recommendations and more. Classes run for 45-60 mins, we work at a controlled pace and focus on exercises and movement that build core strength but also increase balance, co-ordination and flexibility.

“Prior to the pandemic, more of my fitness routine focused on yoga, barre, and spin but I have been motivated, challenged and entertained by Georgina’s classes. As an added bonus I am seeing muscle definition I thought was lost to the ages and I am still able to sit for long hours at an ergonomically incorrect keyboard and monitor.”

“I’ve been taking Georgina’s classes for over 3 years. They are challenging, varied and fun! When the world changed in March 2020, Georgina quickly changed with it, taking her amazing classes online. I went from one class a week to at least 3 days a week. Her classes not only made me stronger, they helped keep me sane during a crazy time. Somehow, Georgina continues to keep her classes fresh and engaging. Thank you!”
